Building An Oven

15-08-2026

Over the summer I have tried building a rudimentary pizza oven using repurposed fire bricks and two concrete slabs. I sadly forgot to document the process of the support structure, so I will describe what I have done. The slabs are identical in shape, but not in content. The foundation is fortified with gravel, and the second plate contains a metal mesh. I kept the supporting structure open so you can store firewood within reach.

For the arch I built a simple wooden support. Using wedges, I was able to align the stones to the support. I didn’t have a keystone, so when the arch was almost done, I chopped down a thin brick to shape. When I removed the support a couple of days after, the arch stood strong and steady. I was even able to chop some bricks to slot in for the chimney! I was not the only one excited with the progress. The cats loved the new spaces and eagerly used the oven as a hiding space.
